    A functional approach to estimation of the parameters of generalized negative binomial and gamma distributions

    The generalized negative binomial distribution (GNB) is a new flexible family of discrete distributions that are mixed Poisson laws with the mixing generalized gamma (GG) distributions. This family of discrete distributions is very wide and embraces Poisson distributions, negative binomial distributions, Sichel distributions, Weibull--Poisson distributions and many other types of distributions supplying descriptive statistics with many flexible models. These distributions seem to be very promising for the statistical description of many real phenomena. GG distributions are widely applied in signal and image processing and other practical problems. The statistical estimation of the parameters of GNB and GG distributions is quite complicated. To find estimates, the methods of moments or maximum likelihood can be used as well as two-stage grid EM-algorithms. The paper presents a methodology based on the search for the best distribution using the minimization of â„“p\ell^p-distances and LpL^p-metrics for GNB and GG distributions, respectively. This approach, first, allows to obtain parameter estimates without using grid methods and solving systems of nonlinear equations and, second, yields not point estimates as the methods of moments or maximum likelihood do, but the estimate for the density function.     The effect of alcohol advertising, marketing and portrayal on drinking behaviour in young people: systematic review of prospective cohort studies

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The effect of alcohol portrayals and advertising on the drinking behaviour of young people is a matter of much debate. We evaluated the relationship between exposure to alcohol advertising, marketing and portrayal on subsequent drinking behaviour in young people by systematic review of cohort (longitudinal) studies.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>studies were identified in October 2006 by searches of electronic databases, with no date restriction, supplemented with hand searches of reference lists of retrieved articles. Cohort studies that evaluated exposure to advertising or marketing or alcohol portrayals and drinking at baseline and assessed drinking behaviour at follow-up in young people were selected and reviewed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>seven cohort studies that followed up more than 13,000 young people aged 10 to 26 years old were reviewed. The studies evaluated a range of different alcohol advertisement and marketing exposures including print and broadcast media. Two studies measured the hours of TV and music video viewing. All measured drinking behaviour using a variety of outcome measures. Two studies evaluated drinkers and non-drinkers separately. Baseline non-drinkers were significantly more likely to have become a drinker at follow-up with greater exposure to alcohol advertisements. There was little difference in drinking frequency at follow-up in baseline drinkers. In studies that included drinkers and non-drinkers, increased exposure at baseline led to significant increased risk of drinking at follow-up. The strength of the relationship varied between studies but effect sizes were generally modest. All studies controlled for age and gender, however potential confounding factors adjusted for in analyses varied from study to study. Important risk factors such as peer drinking and parental attitudes and behaviour were not adequately accounted for in some studies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>data from prospective cohort studies suggest there is an association between exposure to alcohol advertising or promotional activity and subsequent alcohol consumption in young people. Inferences about the modest effect sizes found are limited by the potential influence of residual or unmeasured confounding.</p

    Natural and anthropogenic changes to mangrove distributions in the Pioneer River Estuary (QLD, Australia)

    We analyzed a time series of aerial photographs and Landsat satellite imagery of the Pioneer River Estuary (near Mackay, Queensland, Australia) to document both natural and anthropogenic changes in the area of mangroves available to filter river runoff between 1948 and 2002. Over 54 years, there was a net loss of 137 ha (22%) of tidal mangroves during four successive periods that were characterized by different driving mechanisms: (1) little net change (1948– 1962); (2) net gain from rapid mangrove expansion (1962–1972); (3) net loss from clearing and tidal isolation (1972–1991); and (4) net loss from a severe species-specific dieback affecting over 50% of remaining mangrove cover (1991–2002). Manual digitization of aerial photographs was accurate for mapping changes in the boundaries of mangrove distributions, but this technique underestimated the total loss due to dieback. Regions of mangrove dieback were identified and mapped more accurately and efficiently after applying the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery, and then monitoring changes to the index over time. These remote sensing techniques to map and monitor mangrove changes are important for identifying habitat degradation, both spatially and temporally, in order to prioritize restoration for management of estuarine and adjacent marine ecosystems

    Analysis and possible mitigation of interferences between present and next-generation marine radars

    The maritime traffic is significantly increasing in the recent decades due to its advantageous features related to costs, delivery rate and environmental compatibility. For this reasons it requires a high degree of control and an adequate assistance to the navigation. The related systems are the Vessel Traffic System (VTS), mainly using radar and the Automatic Identification System (AIS). In the recent years a new generation of marine radars with a lower cost of maintenance is being developed. They are based on the solid-state transmitter technology and uses coded "long pulse" in transmission, i.e. high "duty-cycle", with "pulse compression" in reception. The main drawbacks of these apparatuses are the interference effects that they might cause on existing marine radars, becoming critical when the traffic density increases. The AIS data (identity, location, intention and so on) can be useful to estimate the mutual distances among ships and the mean number of surroundings vessels, that is the number of marine radars in visibility. Using suitable models it is shown that the high duty-cycle of solid-state marine radars can generate severe interference to all marine radar sets in visibility with a significant reduction, well below the international regulations, of their detection capability. The mitigation of these damaging effects, not an easy task, can be achieved by changing the radar waveforms, i.e. resorting to Noise Radar Technology
